Classifiche #3.0 - Podi per decenni 1967-2019

Rieccoci, come da tradizione, con le classifiche, ma con ambizioni ridotte rispetto alla precedente ed avventurosa iniziativa. Durante lo iato mi è sembrato naturale ridiscutere le preferenze, nonostante la sensibile riduzione di nuovi ascolti. Come disse Peter Hammill in un intervista a Blow Up vent'anni fa, la vita, tante cose, follie...Una frase sospesa che lascia intendere tutto e niente, e che suona perfetta.

I vantaggi del tempo che passa, nonostante non riesca più ad ascoltare la quantità di musica che vorrei, sono: il costante aumento di conoscenze, tecniche e non; la capacità più rapida nel farsi un giudizio, evitando di perdere tempo dietro a sfide impossibili ed obbligandosi ad avere un metro sempre più severo; la constatazione che la sete di musica non tramonta mai.

Questo giro, all'insegna della massima sobrietà e rapidità, si va di podi annuali. Un post per ogni decennio. Come sempre, si parte dal 1967, perchè per il pre ci vorrebbe un'altra vita (ed un altra cultura, aggiungo). Anticipo che grossi stravolgimenti non ce ne sono; molti pochi, quelli che hanno strappato la palma di migliore dell'anno. Il dato più interessante (e confuso) riguarda senz'altro i podi degli ultimi 10 anni, fino ad oggi inediti.

Dopodichè si riparte col labirinto. Di nuovo, la vita, tante cose, follie...

Man mano che ci si avvicina al presente, le classifiche si fanno più sfumate ed incerte. Difficile, molto improbabile però che per il 2012 riesca ancora a trovare qualcosa di più avvolgente ed emozionante di Black Curtain. Un passo avanti notabile rispetto al giù autorevolissimo primo capitolo del 2009, ed anche se la vena di questa formula si fosse inaridita e non ci fosse seguito, pazienza. Abbiamo già goduto.
Il clamoroso ritorno dei Godspeed è una lezione dura impartita a tutti (i pur bravi) giovincelli che si erano cimentati con l'epic-instru durante il lungo iato dei canadesi. Un bel bagno di umiltà da parte di Dark Dark Dark e Mount Eerie rende l'annata più incline all'introspezione piuttosto che ai massimalismi. Basti pensare anche alla svolta sempre più mistica degli Om, o al ritorno del vecchio leone psicanalitico PH a stati di forma clamorosi. Ben 4 entità italiche stanno a segnalare un ottimo momento creativo nello stivale.

E' decisamente l'anno di Leyland Kirby: con due titoli nella top ten, l'inglese esportato a Berlino regala emozioni a profusione, vincendo la classifica con l'immagignifico Caretaker: opinione condivisa peraltro con Valerio Mattioli, il mio faro di riferimento principale degli ultimi anni. Sorprendono True Widow e Implodes, con degli omogenei revival di correnti passate riviste sotto un ottica molto, molto personale. Conferme importanti e valorose di Battles, Jesu e Necks (eterni). Ma anche sul fronte del nuovo nudo e crudo ci sono perle di assoluto peso, ed in tutte le direzioni, dalle durezze ai melodisti.

Annata più che eccellente, quasi da non sapermi raccapezzare nel decidere i primi posti. Dopo lunga riflessione, vincono i nostrani (seppur trapiantati all'estero) 3/4HBE con lo sconvolgente, e purtroppo ultimo, Oblivion, un'escursione sensoriale da capogiro. Ulteriore riflessione di circostanza: trattasi (a parte Pilia) di cervelli in fuga, di artisti che si sono smarcati da certo provincialismo imperante nel paese e sono diventati cittadini europei a tutti gli effetti.
I 3-4 dischi successivi, in altre annate probabilmente avrebbero vinto; qui invece c'è una bella ammucchiata di disconi attuali, di contaminazioni e arte pura. Ce n'è per tanti gusti, anche nel proseguio della graduatoria. Sorprendono il talento visionario del giovane cantautore toscano Samuel Katarro, il tocco indefinibile di Ingram, lo spin-off BWWD che sembra quasi una casualità, il ritorno di Keiji Haino ad una sorta di death-blues.

Si scrive Om ma si pronuncia Oṃ. La svolta religiosa di Cisneros lo riporta al disco dell'anno, un decennio dopo Dopesmoker. I fumi di THC si sono un po' diradati o forse per conseguenza Dio gli è apparso. Sono molto contento di ciò.

Kirby comincia a fare davvero sul serio; è esagerato, non si dà un limite, è ultraterreno. Ed ancora misticismo dal retaggio pesante per i Jodis, supergruppo che riunisce ex di Isis e Khanate sotto la stessa volta celeste, sopra terra di qualche metro. Poco più giù, un altro ex-Khanate decide di non mollare l'accetta, cambia soltanto zona e mastica duro.

Il disco peso di Tibet ne rilancia un immagine forse ammorbidita da troppi dischi folk. Il ritorno dei Polvo è qualcosa di troppo irresistibile per non innamorarsene.

Skelton e MTB rappresentano la versione incolta della musica folk da camera; inconsapevolezza ed ispirazione sono la base per le loro piccole meraviglie. Gnaw Their Tongues è una delle massime innovazioni, ma saprà fare di meglio di questo episodio. L'inatteso ritorno dei Flaming Lips a nuova giovinezza conferma una delle mie teorie: a volte stare su major, se si resta concentrati ed umili, può aiutare veramente tanto.

Si dice che se un disco dell'anno ha forti riferimenti, richiami al passato remoto, è un indice di cattivo stato di salute della musica. Io questo non credo: ogni epoca ha i suoi giovani con le proprie scelleratezze, le follie e la voglia di rischiare, di azzardare con l'incoscenza propria dell'età. I tempi cambiano velocissimamente e trovo che sia eccitante andare a rovistare per trovare qualcosa da amare, incondizionatamente.

Così, gli HANL hanno composto questo (l'hanno chiamato) kolossal gotico che non ammette repliche, nè da loro nè da altri. Spuntano fuori dal nulla i Beach House che, sì, anche loro così passatisti ma così personali e passionali, da brividi. Helios si conferma ai livelli precedenti. I Drunkdriver spingono forte il pedale del noise-rock più lercio. Journey To Ixtlan sono la classica meteora del vessillo psichedelico senza tempo.

Grande Italia con i soliti Bachi e gli apripista della nuova scena occulta, quei Father Murphy che forse un po' di mondo ci invidia.

Più che un premio onorario alla carriera, Narcotic story rappresenta il miglior punto di fusione fra i vari aspetti che hanno caratterizzato gli Oxbow negli anni. Se ci penso bene, è rimasto l'ultimo vero album di Wenner & co., perchè ciò che è uscito dopo sono state solo collaborazioni, mezzi dischi e mezzi live. Li attendo al varco.

Il grande ritorno di Ian Williams e John Stanier acquisiva valore grazie a due collaboratori sconosciuti ma di spessore enorme. E la formula era immancabilmente nuova. Polly Jean rilasciava il disco più struggente della carriera, generalmente incompreso.

In graduatoria compaiono per la prima volta due titoli di eccellenza di drone-shoegaze-metal, Angelic Process e Nadja, ad inaugurare un filone genericamente poco considerato. Un paio di anomalie spostate (Asbestoscape e Blues Control) impreziosiscono la top ten di stranezza, che ci sta sempre bene. Ma anche a livello melodico escono cose rilevantissime (Stateless e Ulver).

I primi 10 posti sono formati da dischi che rappresentano il top di ciascun gruppo/artista/sigla: a 8 anni di distanza si riesce già a vedere con una certa lucidità e posso affermare che sì, anche nei bistrattati anni zero in musica si sono fatte grandi cose. Come era già successo nel 2002, Rope e Tenhi si affermano come realtà extra-circuito di statura mondiale.

Keith Kenniff si scopre cantautore ambientale di finissimo cesello, i Liars sbancano le classifiche di fine anno (a ragione, una volta tanto), Red Sparowes e UIAM rilanciano e confermano la forma smagliante.

Kirby si lascia alle spalle il terrorismo del primo V/V-m e levita, sorprendentemente, Barzin si afferma come sensibilissimo performer folk dei giorni nostri.

E l'Inghilterra è ancora spaventosamente indietro.

Un trionfo di post-durezza. I Khanate raggiungono il punto di non ritorno dell'ultra-doom sperimentale, i Jesu compaiono con la loro formula incantata di granito e fruttosio. Gli UIAM s'infuriano seriamente contro la gestione Bush e fanno sfracelli.

Più giù, impressionano anche se con meno impatto Orthrelm, Earth e Sunn O))). Probabilmente sono stati i derivati del metallo ad avere una maggiore evoluzione rispetto alle altre tendenze, durante il decennio zero.

Per il resto, si agitano con sicurezza gli ultimi residui del post-rock emotivo (Red Sparowes), dell'ambient-rock (Hood), neo-tradizionalisti anomali (Pinetop Seven), prog-cross-overisti indemoniati (Mars Volta) e molto altro. Qualcosa di pregevole accade anche nella nostra Italietta all'epoca depredata.

Fino al 2003, è stato tutto relativamente facile. Avevo un riferimento precedente su cui basarmi, i cambiamenti in testa sono stati abbastanza pochi. Ora che mi trovo a decidere per l'ultima decade di sana pianta, la questione si fa intricata e riflessiva.

A distanza di quasi trent'anni lo Zehul rivince la palma, questa volta però non è un gruppo francese bensì uno inglese che si ispirava a quei tempi magmatici ma lo contaminava con tendenze più moderne.

Isis e Jesu cercano e trovano una via futuribile al metallo. I Liars fanno passi da gigante col loro art-rock deviato e schizoide. Qualche classico fa conferme importanti.

In generale si è in pieno revival della new-wave. I danni sono incalcolabili tutt'ora.

Alle spalle del disco più emozionante di tutto il post-rock di tutti i tempi, ha inizio una fase in cui la musica dura esprime grandi innovazioni con alcuni capolavori per me diventati dei classici. Secondo e terzo posto stanno lì ad evidenziarlo. Ho approfittato di uno strappo alla regola per mettere Eitzel con quello che era un restyling di alcuni suoi classici, troppo bello per restare nella vacuità delle antologie. Gli extraterrestri polacchi Rope affondano il coltello, Sylvian resuscita a nuova vita senza compromessi.
Di consolazione e alla carriera, l'ultimo posto per Kozelek.

Grande riscossa europea per un podio tutto speciale. La meteora Meanwhile, implosa per motivi personali, era sicuramente destinata a fare cose speciali ma fu il loro addio. I finnici Tenhi e i polacchi Rope invece incarnavano la rivelazione di un altra Europa, quella da sempre emarginata dai circuiti internazionali ma forse proprio per questo cresciuta in un contesto vergine e pronta ad inventare.

A seguire, sfonda il debutto sconvolgente di Xiu Xiu e risalta la svolta degli Isis verso grandi panorami. Il primo degli Interpol segna ufficialmente l'inizio del revival della new-wave, destinato ad incassare grandi fortune negli anni a venire. Anche Oneida e Black Dice iniziano a guadagnare grandi consensi, ma non si ripeteranno a questi livelli.
